Traditional Charm

At the Isle of Purbeck’s eastern tip lies the delightful seaside town of Swanage. With its long, gently sloping, golden sandy beach and clear waters, Swanage is rightly proud of its Blue Flag status. The bay has beautiful views and there’s plenty to see and do.

Stroll the promenade, enjoy the seaside attractions, browse artisan studios, galleries and plenty of shops. There’s also a theatre, cinema and museum. In the last week of July Swanage holds its annual regatta and carnival, one of the premier carnivals on the south coast.

For a touch of the Mediterranean, enjoy freshly caught seafood alfresco along the seafront. There are lovely bistros, sea view restaurants, traditional pubs, tearooms and takeaways.

Before you return to Burnbake, Swanage is ideal for stocking up with fare from independent butchers, bakers, fishmongers and farm shops selling local produce. Market day is Friday (April to October) and there’s a Purbeck Produce Market on the second Saturday of every month.

For an extra special day out, leave the car at Corfe Castle Station and board the Swanage Railway for a steam engine ride through the Purbeck countryside to Swanage – and back again of course.
